Annual Physicals Q & A
What happens during an annual physical?
An annual physical is a comprehensive review of your overall health and is an essential part of primary care services at LaSante Health Center. Annual physicals check the following areas:
Visual
Your doctor performs a visual inspection. They assess how comfortably you move and stand, and evaluate your general appearance for signs of good health.
Vital signs
Your physician takes your blood pressure, respiratory rate, and heart rate.
Physical
Your doctor tests your reflexes, checks your eyes, nose, mouth, ears, skin, hair, and nails, and feels your abdomen for abnormalities. If you have neck or back pain, they inspect these areas too.
Your provider may also offer other services, including vaccinations, family planning, hormonal therapy, and weight loss consultations.
What screening tests are included in an annual physical?
Depending on your age, gender, or family history, you may receive screening for certain diseases, including:
- Pap smear, breast and pelvic exams (women only)
- Mammogram referral (women only)
- Prostate cancer and testicular cancer (men only)
- Depression and other mental health conditions
- Diabetes
- Cholesterol
- Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)
- Hepatitis C
- HIV
- Cancer screenings (e.g., lung, colon)
Physicians often screen only for diseases you’re at risk of developing, but you’re always welcome to discuss additional screening with your provider.
Why do annual physicals include STD testing?
If left untreated, an STD can cause serious long-term complications, such as infertility, which is why your provider may screen for them during an annual physical.
Typical signs of an STD include:
- Genital rash
- Unusual discharge or bleeding
- Lower abdominal pain
- Painful or swollen groin area
- Painful intercourse
- Painful urination
During your STD testing, your provider usually screens for HIV, chlamydia, trichomoniasis, hepatitis B and C, syphilis, and gonorrhea. They can also test you for herpes type 1 and type 2 if you request it.
How can an annual physical help with weight loss?
An annual physical is an excellent time to raise weight concerns with your LaSante Health Center provider. They know your health history, and you may already speak with them about your lifestyle habits.
They can help create a sustainable, actionable, and personalized diet and exercise program, and support you through your journey. Together, you set goals, and they adjust your plan as you see success.
People often lose weight faster when they receive support through the process. An experienced medical professional can give you the extra boost you need to get started.
When you partner with LaSante Health Center, you work with medical professionals who care about your health as much as you do. Call today or visit their website to book your annual physical.
